Founded in 1896, is one of twenty-one public liberal arts universities in the nation. Montevallo offers more than 37 programs and approximately 75 majors in its four colleges that is made up of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Michael E. Stephens College of business, the College of Education, and the College of fine arts.

In addition to rigorous academic programs, UM has a very strong student life which includes an excellent athletic department. Ten men's and women's athletic teams compete in the NCAA II East Division. The university is located in the town of Montevallo, 35 miles south of Birmingham, Alabama on a picturesque campus. The 160-acre landscape is known for its beauty nationwide. A 97,000 square-foot activity center features a 6-Lane-collegiate-competition-sized pool and provides students with state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

The University of Montevallo has been recognized and included in the 'Colleges of Distinction'. UM is also the highest-ranked public university in Alabama recognized by U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges".
