Originally chartered in 1835 as a women's college, the University of West Alabama today is a co-educational public liberal arts institution and has an enrollment of over 2,300 students. UWA has a rich 170-year old history as it first started out as a church-related female Academy. The first male students weren't admitted until the early 20th century.

UWA (sometimes referred to as Livingston) offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs including nursing, education, business and natural sciences along with many others. The university consists of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of business, the College of Education, the Division of Nursing and the School of Graduate Studies. UWA also offers extensive online programs in education, business etc.

The University of West Alabama has a vibrant academic department that consists of 12 different men's and women's sports teams. UWA also has a healthy student life with a wide range of clubs and organizations to suit each student's preferences. Sororities such as Alpha Kappa Alpha and fraternities such as Alpha Phi Alpha make up a thriving Greek life on campus. UWA has 6 resident halls and an apartment complex that are all conveniently located near classes and other important campus buildings.
