Thomas Jefferson University is located on a 13-acre urban campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was founded in 1824. The academic health center includes the
Jefferson Medical College, the
Jefferson College of Graduate Studies, and the
Jefferson College of Health Professions. Thomas Jefferson University strives to provide compassionate clinical care, lead the nation with its research, and be a center for clinical trials and patient-oriented research.
Recent extensions to the Philadelphia school's campus include expansions to the emergency and trauma center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Renovations were completed in 1990 and the center is now both the top regional resource and a federally designated spinal cord injury center. New operating rooms opened in 1992, bringing the hospital to a total of 28 operating rooms and 717 beds.
Doctoral programs at Thomas Jefferson University include anatomy, developmental biology, immunology, pharmacology and physiology. Undergraduate programs include
nursing, occupational therapy, and medical technology. The Philadelphia school also offers an undergraduate multicompetency program in diagnostic training, which is one of two in the nation.
U.S. News & World Report has ranked Thomas Jefferson University the best comprehensive
medical school in the U.S. in recent years. Notable alumni from the Philadelphia school have developed the heart-lung machine, demonstrated the existence of erythropoietin, and made possible the prenatal electrocardiogram.
