Thompson Rivers University was founded as a community college in 1970 and reached university status in 2004. Located in Kamloops, British Colombia, it is the fourth largest university in the province with about 9,500 students on campus.

Thompson Rivers University offers more than 50 undergraduate degree options. The comprehensive British Columbia University has master's programs in business administration, environmental science and education, as well as post-Baccalaureate diplomas in journalism, accounting, finance, human resource management, international business and marketing. And with a satellite campus in Williams Lake and a host of Regional Centres where students can take credit-bearing classes, Thompson Rivers University is a distance learner's dream. TRU students can access more than 400 online courses, earning certificates, diplomas or degrees in selected fields. About 15,000 students take advantage of the British Columbia University's distance study programs.

The Faculty of Arts offers a double degree (a BA in geography and a BS in geomatics) with the University of Gavle in Sweden that is completed in five years of full-time, with students spending their third and forth year studying abroad in Sweden. The School of Business and Economics initiated programs with the Aboriginal Community: certificates in First Nations Applied Economics and First Nations Public Administration--Taxation.

Thompson Rivers University competes in baseball, badminton, men's and women's soccer, volleyball and basketball. The cheerleading squad debuted during the 2006-07 season. TRU teams compete at the $27 million Tournament Capital Centre, which features a fieldhouse, sports medicine clinic, triple gymnasium, a FIFA-certified turf in stadium and two grass playing fields.
