Tougaloo College is a private, four-year,
Historically Black College located on 500 acres in Tougaloo, Mississippi, just on the outskirts of Jackson. Founded as Tougaloo University in 1869, Tougaloo College was established by the American Ministry Association of New York.
Through its history, Tougaloo College merged with the Southern
Christian Institute and the name was then changed to the Tougaloo Southern
Christian college. In 1962, the name was changed to Tougaloo College. Tougaloo College has always not only had a strong commitment to education with a
liberal arts emphasis, it has been on the forefront of important social movements, including the Civil Rights movement of the 1850s and 60s. Mississippi was a flashpoint for the movement and Tougaloo College served as a safe haven for those working to improve race relations within Mississippi and the country. Tougaloo College is a non-denominational Christian school.
Today, Tougaloo College offers 29 majors in five divisions to approximately 1,000 students each year. The divisions include education supervision and instruction, humanities, natural science, social science, continuing education and professional studies. Majors include art, art education, biology, biology education, chemistry, chemistry education, child development, computer science, economics, accounting,
business administration, early childhood education, early entry
nursing program, elementary education, English, English education, health and physical education, health and recreation, journalism, community health, health education, recreation for special populations, history, African American studies, history education, hotel and hospitality management, mathematics, computer science, music, music education, physics, physics education, political science, psychology, sociology and social work.
Students may live on campus in one of the four residence halls, which accommodate approximately 700 students. Residence hall assignments are given to students on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to having access to the campus and its resources, students at Tougaloo College live within minutes of downtown Jackson, a vibrant and culturally diverse city.

There are more than 20 clubs and organizations on campus at Tougaloo College. In addition, students who have a GPA of 2.50 or higher may elect to join one of the one dozen Greek fraternities or sororities on campus.
Intramural sport programs include basketball, volleyball, power lifting, softball, badminton, tennis, flag football, soccer, pool, bowling and table tennis.
The Tougaloo College Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs compete in the NAIA Division I. Tougaloo College has intercollegiate teams in baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf and tennis.
There are six honors societies on the campus of Tougaloo College: Alpha Kappa Delta, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta, Alphi Phi Omega and Kappa Delta Pi.
