Founded in 1964 along the Otonabee River, Trent University caters to more than 6,550 full-time undergraduates and about 1,400 part-time students on two sites: the 1,450-acre Petersburgh campus and the Oshawa extension, located on the Durham College and the University of Ontario
Institute of Technology campus, which boasts a 16:1 student-to-teacher ratio.
Acclaimed by The National Post as the top research university in Canada three years in a row, Trent University offers a wide selection of courses across the
humanities and social and natural sciences, as well as
business and professional programs. The
Ontario university is actively growing its graduate offerings, adding a Ph.D. program in Cultural Studies in 2007.
There are four distinct residential colleges on the Petersburgh campus, all of which are integral to the Trent University experience and include residence rooms, dining facilities, professors' offices, lecture halls and seminar rooms. Even TU students who do not live in residence are affiliated with one of Trent's colleges.

Trent University students compete on 18 teams, which represent the school in the Ontario University Athletics or Ontario College Athletics Association conferences. Sports include men's and women's cross-country, curling, fencing, Nordic skiing, rowing, rugby, soccer, swimming and volleyball.
Students participating in Trent University's interdisciplinary Ecological Restoration program work to recover damaged and destroyed ecosystems at various project sites. To do so, they combine scientific knowledge gained in the classroom with field skills.
