Troy University was founded in 1887 by the Alabama state legislature. In 1973, Troy University expanded to Florida and opened academic sites at Hurlburt Field, Eglin Air Force Base, and eventually established campuses in Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, Jacksonville, Orlando, Panama City and Tampa Bay.

Associate, bachelor's, master's, and education specialist degrees awarded by Troy University-Florida Sites are accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Degree programs vary from site to site. Hurlburt Field offers students undergraduate programs in criminal justice, political science and social science. Eglin Air Force Base offers undergraduate programs in accounting, management, and political science, plus several graduate programs and Associate Degrees.

Pensacola offers students at Troy University-Florida Sites undergraduate programs in accounting and psychology, along with graduate programs in educational administration and human resources management. Both the Jacksonville and Orlando sites offer several graduate programs to Troy University-Florida Sites students. Tampa Bay offers graduate programs in public administration, business administration, and counseling and psychology.

U.S. News & World Report has named Troy University-Florida Sites as one of 64 schools from the Southeast region with leading graduate programs, and the Princeton Review has named the Florida School the best in the Southeast. Money magazine called Troy University-Florida Sites one of the top 25 investments among public higher level institutions in the U.S.
