As a teaching college, the university prospered, especially after World War II, when returning service men and women took advantage of the G.I. bill to continue their education. In the 1950s, Troy University established a long-standing relationship with the military, offering classes on military bases. One of those established at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1965 led to the creation of the Montgomery campus as it is known today.
