For more than 100 years, the United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks (USAWC) has prepared senior military officers and civilians for strategic leadership responsibilities. After completing the college's curriculum, students receive a Master's of Strategic Studies degree. Graduates are equipped for leadership positions in the national strategic environment, or as advisors to the senior leadership of the Armed Forces, the Department of Defense, other government agencies, or in foreign militaries.

A 10-month resident program is available as well as a distance education programs that is taught over the span of two years and includes two, two-week long resident courses. Both programs comply with the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Officer Professional military education Policy (OPMEP) and adhere to Army training and education guidance.

A select number of graduates from the United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks are eventually hired for the most senior leadership positions within their organizations.

Quick Facts:

  • Officers must be a serving colonel or lieutenant colonel (or equivalent) with at least 16, but not more than 23, years of service at the starting date of the course in order to attend.

  • Approximately 35,000 eligible officers are accepted every year.

  • The United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks is accredited by the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff as a Joint Professional military education, Phase I institution.
