Universite Laval is considered one of the top research universities in canada. The Quebec university offers more than 350 undergraduate and graduate programs to approximately 40,000 students. About one-quarter of its students are post-graduates. Universite Laval has global appeal, drawing around 2,000 international students and about 1,000 out-of-province Canadians. With more than 125 research centers and about 1,200 faculty members receiving research grants, research is a significant part of Universite Laval's mission.

Universite Laval is also the oldest university in the country. Back in 1663, Monseigneur François de Laval opened the Seminaire de Quebec with the permission from Louis XIV. Universite Laval branched out into the city of Montreal in 1878; this second campus would later become the Universite de Montreal.

The campus is about 1.2 square-kilometers with more than 30 buildings connected by 10 kilometers of underground tunnels. There are four student residences on campus with 2,300 rooms. Le Peps is the focal point of the local sports and recreation scene. Universite Laval have at their disposal five gymnasiums, an all-weather stadium, a climbing wall, a fitness center, an Olympic-size pool, soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts, a golf driving range, and sports medicine and physiotherapy clinics. The convertible Peps arena can hold 2,000 hockey or figure skating fans. Eleven teams compete in the Sport Excellence Program at Universite Laval.
