The College of Education is made up of the Department of Counseling, the Department of Curricular and Instructional Studies, the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, and the Department of Sports Science and Wellness Education. Each program is accredited by its respective organization.
The College of Education is part of the larger
University of Akron, founded in 1870 as Buchtel College. There are more than 200 undergraduate majors and areas of study at UA and more than 110 Master's and doctoral programs. The University has more than 200 student groups, including sororities and fraternities, bands, gospel choir, theatre guilds and athletics. The University operates two 15-week semesters starting in August and January with an optional summer semester. They offer on-campus housing, financial aid and many scholarship programs.
The college is designated a "successful college of education" by the Ohio Department of Education. Programs in each department have specific designations. Undergraduate students are prepared for work in a variety of educational settings while graduate programs prepare students for future employment in educational settings as teachers and administrators, mental health agencies, institutions of higher education and physical education/exercise physiology/sports science settings. The College operates seven centers and more than 40 collaborative arrangements with state and local organizations and agencies to enhance students outreach to the community and student teaching opportunities.
