The
University of Alaska Southeast is an open-enrollment public university located in Alaska's capital and surrounded by the last great expanse of temperate rainforest left in North America. Along with offering traditional undergraduate degrees, the University of Alaska Southeast provides students with certification and occupational endorsements.
The University of Alaska Southeast is part of an educational system of more than 32,000 students, that includes three separately accredited urban universities in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, and includes a dozen community campuses, from Ketchikan in Southeast Alaska, to Kotzebue.
The University of Alaska Southeast has combined a
liberal arts formula with its pristine surroundings and utilizes the Tongass National Forest as a living classroom. Academic programs, such as the natural sciences, are uniquely designed to integrate Southeast Alaska's surroundings by taking students out of the classroom and into their field of study. The Mendenhall Glacier, the shores of the Inside Passage, and stands of old growth forest are all within three miles of the Alaska university.

The Juneau-Douglas community college, founded in 1956, and the Southeastern Senior College, established in 1972, were merged in 1980 forming the University of Alaska Juneau.

The University of Alaska Board of Regents approved four new degree and certificate programs for the University of Alaska Southeast, including Masters degrees in math education and educational leadership, an Associate of business degree and a certificate in pre-engineering
