The University of California Merced is one of the colleges in the state of California's university system. The University of California system has ten colleges. The other nine are: Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, San Diego and Riverside. Each year, more than 220,000 students enroll at University of California schools. The system employs more than 170,000 faculty and staff and there are more than 1,5 million living alumni of the system. The University of California Merced is the 10th school in the system and was opened in 2005 - the first school to open within the system in 40 years. The University of California Merced was also the first public research university to be built in the country in the twenty-first century.

The University of California Merced currently has three schools: engineering; natural sciences; social sciences, humanities and arts. More than 1,800 students enroll at the University of California Merced each year. Bachelor's degrees offered include: bioengineering, computer science and engineering, environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical sciences, earth systems science, physics, anthropology, cognitive science, economics, history, literature and cultures, management, political science and psychology. In addition, the University of California Merced offers students the option of 18 minor programs. Master's degrees are awarded in: applied mathematics, physics and chemistry, biological engineering and small-scale technologies, electrical engineering and computer science, environmental systems, mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, quantitative and systems biology, social and cognitive sciences and world cultures. The University of California Merced is an evolving campus and the college is planning on adding a School of Management and a school of medicine that will open additional degree opportunities.

Research facilities established at the University of California Merced include: Sierra Nevada Research Institute, the World Cultures Institute and the Biomedical Studies Research Institute. The University of California Merced is located next to Lake Yosemite in the San Joaquin Valley of Central California. There are many outdoor recreational opportunities. Students wishing to live on campus can live in one of the three residence halls that can accommodate 1,000 students. The campus was built for environmental sustainability and all of the buildings were constructed using the most modern "green" techniques. Additionally, the University of California Merced has set aside 25,000 acres of grassland habitat for conservation. That effort was a collaboration with several foundations.
