The
University of California Santa Cruz is one of the colleges in the state of California's university system. The University of California system has ten colleges. The other nine are:
Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, San Diego and Riverside. Each year, more than 220,000 students enroll at University of
California schools. The system employs more than 170,000 faculty and staff and there are more than 1,5 million living alumni of the system. The University of California Santa Cruz opened in the
California university system in 1965.
Today more than 15,000 students per year attend the University of California Santa Cruz. Students have choices from 63 Bachelor's Degree majors and 34 Master's and Doctorate Degree programs. There are five schools at the University of California Santa Cruz: Humanities, Physical and Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts and the Jack Basking School of
engineering. The University of California Santa Cruz is known for graduating students with high aptitude for letters, arts and sciences. Faculty and emeriti include 13 members of the National
Academy of Sciences, 22 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and two members of the Institute of Medicine. Before graduation, each senior must complete a comprehensive exam, a senior thesis or some other major body of work.
In general, students who attend the University of California Santa Cruz love the outdoors. In 2003, Outside Magazine ranked the University of California Santa Cruz as first among 40 colleges that have students with a sense of adventure, a healthy view of the environment and "top-notch" academic credentials. Students may live on or off campus at the University of California Santa Cruz, but they will be associated with one of the college units. The units assist first year and transfer students with the core curriculum necessary. Students who wish to study abroad may do so and have a choice of over 30 countries.

In addition to two gyms; tennis racquetball/handball and basketball courts; dance and martial arts studios; weight rooms; volleyball courts and an Olympic sized swimming pool, students at the University of California Santa Cruz also have access to the boating facility at the harbor about 5 miles from campus.
