The University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu is the only public four-year university located in the leeward O'ahu area and offers degrees in liberal arts and professional studies. In the next few years, the University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu expects to expand by opening a new campus in Kapolei.

Enrollment at this Hawai'i university is comprised of recent high school graduates and transfer students, but is largely made up of non-traditional students who are on average 33 years old. As a result, the University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu provides instruction via computer and telecommunications, certificate programs, mentoring, individualized degree programs, and credit for prior learning.

Bachelor's degrees and certificate programs are offered to neighboring island residents via distance-delivered classes, such as the Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with a Political Science concentration. All students pursuing this degree are required to take an interdisciplinary course schedule including philosophy, statistics, humanities and general social science as well as a selection of political science classes.
