The
University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) is one of three public colleges in the University of Illinois system. The other two colleges are
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Illinois
Chicago. The University of Illinois Springfield was founded in 1969 as Sangamon State University. In 1995, the college became part of the state university system and was renamed University of Illinois Springfield.
Today, nearly 5,000 students per year enroll at the University of Illinois Springfield. There are four colleges:
business and Management, Education and Human Services,
liberal arts and Sciences, and Public Affairs and Administration. The University of Illinois Springfield awards Bachelor's degrees in 23 programs, as well as offering 21 Master's degree programs, 17 Graduate certificates and one Doctoral degree and 28 areas in which to minor. In addition, 17
online degrees (8 undergraduate/ 9 graduate) are available, as well as seven online graduate certificates. UIS is home to the Center for State Policy and Leadership and the Downstate Illinois Innocence Project, as well as research institutes such as the Emiquon Field Station, where students can work with professionals from the Nature Conservancy.
The college is located on 748 acres near Lake Springfield near the southeastern suburbs of the city, nearly 100 miles northeast of St. Louis and 200 miles southwest of Chicago. There is a rich history in the city of Springfield as it is the state capitol, as well as the home of Abraham Lincoln. The medium-sized city has much to offer for arts and culture as it offers music, theater, museums, and comedy clubs. The strong programs in political science, public affairs reporting, environmental sciences, legal studies, public administration, social work, and criminal justice lend to the atmosphere surrounding the capitol. The university is known nationally for its diverse and abundant opportunities in paid undergraduate and graduate internships/fellowships.
Mass transit connects the campus to all parts of the city, including the historic downtown. Incoming freshmen are expected (with few exceptions) to live in dorm-style residences, while transfer students may choose to live in conveniently located apartment/townhouse style residential units. Married/Family housing is available .
