University of Kansas Medical Center is the
medical school and research center that is part of the University of Kansas. Located in an urban area in Kansas City, Kansas right on the Missouri state line, the University of Kansas Medical Center operates alongside the University of Kansas Hospital, which provides many opportunities for clinical and residency study for medical school students. Students at the University of Kansas Medical Center have an opportunity to work with more than 19,000 patients a year who are cared for at the University of Kansas Hospital. The University of Kansas Medical Center and Hospital is one of the premier teaching institutions and largest in the Midwest.
The University of Kansas Medical Center is divided into five schools:
Allied Health, Medicine,
nursing, Continuing Education and Graduate Studies. In the School of Allied Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center, students may choose from 20-degree programs. Approximately 60 percent of
health care workers are comprised of allied health professionals. Degree programs include audiology, clinical laboratory science, dietetics and nutrition, nuclear medicine technology, physical therapy and respiratory care. At the
school of medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, 175 students are accepted annually to begin their studies as doctors. Residency programs are completed either in Kansas City or Wichita. The school is highly competitive and students must have a high achieving academic record to be considered. In the School of Nursing, students prepare for a career in the nursing fields. Founded in 1906 as the Department of Nursing. Together, the University of Kansas Medical Center offers over 30 degree programs through its various schools.
The University of Kansas Medical Center is located in an urban area of Kansas City, Kansas in Wyandotte County. The area is economically and socially diverse and provides many opportunities for students to engage in community service. There are many advantages to being located in a large metropolitan area. The Kansas City area is home to major league sports teams, performing arts, museums, entertainment districts and Kansas City, Kansas is home to NASCAR's Kansas Speedway and the largest tourism district in Kansas. There are no on-campus residences at the University of Kansas Medical Center, but there are many affordable options surrounding the campus.
