University of Lethbridge began as Letherbridge
junior college in 1957. It was the first public junior college in the country to offer first-year university classes to students. After reaching university status in 1967, the gates of the University of Lethbridge's permanent campus opened in 1972 along the Oldman River. The University of Lethbridge is characterized by small classes, student interaction with caring instructors ,and a liberal education environment that emphasizes art, history and cultural studies.
University of Lethbridge enrolls around 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students who select from more than 150 programs across six faculties and schools. The Faculty of Arts and Science includes more than 30 disciplines, including English, psychology,
Native American Studies, biochemistry, and sociology, while students within the Faculty of Education can take advantage of a five-year combined degrees program, which includes student teaching experience in Alberta.
Well known for its multi-million dollar art collection, the University of Lethbridge maintains a strong
fine arts program, with more than 800 students involved in art, music, theater and new media. Throughout the year, Lethbridge students take part in art exhibitions, live music concerts, new media presentations and stage productions.

Students in the University of Lethbridge's business management program take courses in accounting, finance, marketing and more, culminating with the Bachelor of Management degree. Students can also attain certificates in management and a post-baccalaureate certificate in accounting. Some students take advantage of the co-op program, which allows them to gain solid workplace experience that ties into their academic studies.
One-third of entering first-year students receive some form of scholarship assistance.
The University of Lethbridge offers evening and weekend classes through its Calgary Campus, along with international exchanges and work-study programs.
Coursework for Lethbridge students majoring in biosystems and biodiversity can include classes covering biogeography, ecology, environmental science, evolutionary biology, global change, physiology, resource ecology and systematics.
