The University of Louisiana Lafayette is one of the colleges within the University of Louisiana system. Other colleges within the system are: Grambling State University, Louisiana Tech University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Southeastern Louisiana University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The University of Louisiana Lafayette traces its roots to 1898 when Louisiana lawmakers established the Industrial Institute and Academy. The school opened in 1901 on 25 acres of donated land on the outskirts of Lafayette. In 1921, the school began awarding Bachelor's degrees. The name has changed over the years - first from Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute to Southwestern Louisiana Institute to the University of Southwestern Louisiana to finally what it's known as today, but the mission to provide quality education to students in southwestern Louisiana and beyond has always remained the same.

Today, more than 16,000 students per year enroll at the University of Louisiana Lafayette and can choose from 80 Bachelor's degree programs and 29 Master's degree programs. The University of Louisiana Lafayette has ten colleges and schools: College of Arts; B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration; College of Education; College of engineering; College of General Studies; College of Liberal Arts; College of Nursing; College of Sciences; Graduate School and the University College. The National Science Foundation ranks the math department at University of Louisiana Lafayette as one of the top 100 in the country. The Computer Science Department ranks in the top 60 in the country. Students wishing to obtain a Doctorate of Philosophy Degree can do so in the following areas: applied language and speech sciences; biology; cognitive science; English; Francophone studies; mathematics; computer science and computer engineering.

The University of Louisiana Lafayette is located on a total of approximately 1,400 acres. The main campus consists of 261 buildings with a total of 4.2 million square feet. The University of Louisiana Lafayette is known as a research center. The University Research Park includes tenants such as governmental agencies and other entities. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Agriculture, the Fish and Wildlife Services, the Geological Survey and Geological Survey National Wetlands Research Center are all tenants in the park. Additionally, the University of Louisiana Lafayette owns a farm/renewable research laboratory and the New Iberia Research Center in New Iberia, one of the largest private, non-human primate breeding facilities in the world.
