Located on the coastal waters of Machias, Maine, the University of Maine Machias is part of the public state college system of Maine. The other colleges in the system are: University of Maine Orono, University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine Farmington, University of Maine Ft. Kent, University of Maine at Presque Isle, the University of Southern Maine and Maine Law School. The University of Maine System was established in 1968 with the goal of providing accessible and affordable learning opportunities, as well as to improve the quality of life in Maine. In addition to the universities and outreach centers, the University of Maine system has 75 local ITV sites for distance learners.

University of Maine Machias has 13 programs: college studies; behavioral science and community studies; biology; business and entrepreneurial studies; elementary education; English; environmental studies; history; interdisciplinary fine arts; marine biology; middle level teacher education; recreation and tourism management and secondary education. The recreation and tourism management degree requires a specialization. Specialty areas from which to choose include: adventure recreation; sport and fitness management; tourism management and park management. Additionally, the University of Maine Machias has applied research projects in the following areas: economics; behavioral science and marine biology. The Merrill Library on campus is home to over 15,000 full text journals to assist with research and study.

Approximately 40 percent of the undergraduates at the University of Maine Machias live in resident housing on campus. While many campuses seem deserted on the weekends, a the college estimates that at least half of the students stay around even on the weekends. That may be because of the wealth of things to do in and around campus and the town of Machias. The University of Maine Machias is located on the coast of Maine, about halfway between Bar Harbor and Canada, providing many water-based opportunities for students in their leisure time. The town of Machias has about 3,000 residents. Bar Harbor is a well-known tourist destination with antique shops, lighthouses and the beautiful coastal waters to enjoy.
