The University of Maine Presque Isle is located on 150 acres in Presque Isle and is part of the University of Maine college system. The other colleges in the system are: University of Maine Orono, University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine Farmington, University of Maine Ft. Kent, the University of Southern Maine and Maine Law School. The University of Maine System was established in 1968 with the goal of providing accessible and affordable learning opportunities, as well as to improve the quality of life in Maine. In addition to the universities and outreach centers, the University of Maine system has 75 local ITV sites for distance learners. Founded in 1901 as a teaching college, the program still remains popular at the University of Maine Presque Isle. However, the college has added many other programs.

Approximately 1,600 students enroll at the University of Maine Presque Isle each year. The college offers 26 degree and professional program in seven schools: Business and International Studies; English and Fine Art; School of Human Performance and Leisure; Psychology, Social Work and Criminal Justice; School of Science and Mathematics; School of Education; and the Teacher Certification Program. Associate degrees are awarded in: criminal justice; liberal studies and medical laboratory technology. Bachelor's degrees are awarded in: accounting; three areas of art; athletic training; behavioral science; biology; business management; criminal justice; elementary education, English; English/writing; environmental studies; international studies/history; international studies/political science; liberal studies; mathematics; three areas of physical education; psychology; recreation and leisure services; secondary education and social work. Additionally, there are 28 minors programs.

There are four residence halls on campus that house over 360 students. The University of Maine Presque Isle is located on the outskirts of Portland, Maine's largest city, giving students many opportunities for off-campus recreation, arts and sporting activities. The University of Maine Presque Isle is also located approximately 15 miles from the Canadian border and many students venture into New Brunswick.
