The
University of Maine School of Law is part of the University of Maine College System. The other colleges in the system are: University of Maine Orono,
University of Maine at Augusta,
University of Maine Farmington,
University of Maine Ft. Kent, the University of Southern Maine and the
University of Maine Presque Isle. The
University of Maine System was established in 1968 with the goal of providing accessible and affordable learning opportunities, as well as to improve the quality of life in Maine. In addition to the universities and outreach centers, the University of Maine system has 75 local ITV sites for distance learners. The University of Maine School of Law seeks to help students prepare for a wide variety of professions within the realm of the legal world. Students attending the University of Maine School of Law enter business, political life, public service and become trial attorneys. Each year, a moot court competition is held and finalists have the opportunity to argue their cases before the justices at the Maine Supreme Court.
Admissions at the University of Maine School of Law is competitive. The school reviews the applicant's undergraduate course of study - including the GPA and if the student selected a program that was challenging. The LSAT performance, as well as a personal statement and personal recommendations are also reviewed. Because many students have similar GPAs and LSAT scores, writing ability on the personal statement, personal recommendations and a student's achievements to date distinguish a student.
Once admitted to the University of Maine School of Law, the course of study is a rigorous one. Students in the first year take a specific curriculum to help them learn and again an understanding of legal terms, statutory materials and case studies. Most second and third year courses are elective and are designed to help students build upon the foundations learned in the first year of study. The upper level courses are also designed to assist students in selecting a specialized course of study, depending on their professional goals. There are some upper level courses required for each student and every student is required to complete The Independent Writing Requirement. The University of Maine School of Law recognizes the need for community service and helping the poor and people typically underserved by the law. Special lecture series are presented each semester on the subject.
