The
University of Maine System is the public
state college system of Maine. The colleges in the system are: University of Maine Orono,
University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine at Farmington, University of Maine at Ft.
Kent, University of Maine at Machias, University of Maine at Presque Isle, the
University of Southern Maine and Maine
law school. The University of Maine system was established in 1968 with the goal of providing accessible and affordable learning opportunities, as well as to improve the quality of life in Maine. In addition to the universities and outreach centers, the University of Maine system has 75 local ITV sites for distance learners.
Students wishing to attend the University of Maine's public college system have a wide variety of choices in class settings. The universities are spread throughout the state from small towns to large cities. For undergraduates, the University of Maine System offers nearly 600 majors, minors and specialty concentrations in all of its schools. Two of the state's universities offer graduate degrees: The University of Maine offers Master's degrees in over 60 areas of study and doctorate degrees in 25 program areas. The University of Southern Maine offers 27 advanced degrees in a wide range of fields of study.
The universities in the University of Maine System are scattered throughout the state, from the mountains to the ocean. Maine is a state of beauty and many tourists come to the state to experience the great outdoors. Maine is home to 4,000 miles of coastline and many of the universities have easy access to the shore. Beaches, islands, parks and recreational areas are just some of the attractions students at the universities take in during their leisure time. In the mountains, students have mountain biking, climbing and hiking in the warm to cool seasons and snow skiing in the winter. Multicultural celebrations, festivals, county fairs and winter fests are also a part of the life in Maine.

The University of Maine System schools compete in intercollegiate sports in the NCAA Division I, II and III. Additionally, there are intramural sports at every college.
Over 75 percent of students in the University of Maine System receive some form of financial aid. The New England Regional Student program allows students from New England to attend schools in the University of Maine System if their major is in an area not offered by public colleges in their home state.
