The University of Massachusetts Amherst is the research college within the University of Massachusetts system. The system has four other colleges: The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, the University of Massachusetts at Boston, the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the University of Massachusetts medical school. Established in 1863 as the University of Massachusetts Agricultural College, it was renamed to the Massachusetts State College in 1932. There is a 19-member voting board and a president that oversees all of the colleges. The original school in the system is now the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is located on 1,463 acres in Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts.

The University of Massachusetts systems enrolls approximately 58,000 students per year and nearly 25,000 of those students are at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The school is the oldest, as well as the flagship college within the system. The University of Massachusetts Amherst offers a half dozen associate degree programs, 87 Bachelor's degree programs, 73 Master's degree programs and 52 doctorate degree programs.

There are ten colleges and schools located within the University of Massachusetts Amherst: School of Education; College of engineering; College of Humanities and Fine Arts; Isenberg School of Management; College of Natural Resources and the Environment; College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; School of nursing; School of Public Health and Health Sciences; College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. In addition, honors students have the option of attending the Commonwealth School. There is a separate graduate school for students wishing to pursue advanced degrees.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is also a part of the five college interchange of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges, allowing students to use also use the resources of those colleges. Students wishing to live on campus can do so in one of 45 residence halls that can accommodate over 12,000 students and 345 families in apartment and town homes.
