The University of Michigan-Dearborn was founded in 1959 on the former estate of automotive pioneer Henry Ford as a 196-acre gift from the Ford Motor Company. One third of the campus, more than 70 acres, is maintained as one of the largest natural areas in metropolitan Detroit, and is a research and educational resource for the campus and the region.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn offers more than 80 bachelor's and master's degrees in arts and sciences, education, engineering and computer science, and management. There are more than 9,000 enrolled students and 381 full-time instructional faculty at the Michigan university.

Faculty and students collaborate across the three campuses that make up the University of Michigan. The main campus in Ann Arbor is located just 35 miles west of the Dearborn campus, and the other regional campus is in Flint.
