The University of Northern British Columbia is known as one of the best small colleges in the country, focusing on sound teaching, personal attention and cutting-edge research. UNBC's main campus is located in Prince George, but there are satellite campuses scattered throughout the northern section of British Columbia as well. Maclean's named the University of Northern British Columbia the best small university in Western canada three years in a row. And in 2007, UNBC was named "Research University of the Year," beating out schools with more than three times as many students.

UNBC offers more than 60 academic programs leading to certificates, diplomas and degrees. Six themed clusters form the core of the University of Northern British Columbia's curriculum: natural resources and environment; health and human development; commerce and community sustainability; indigenous peoples' knowledge; global processes and perspectives; and artistic and cultural expression. The courses within each cluster are interdisciplinary. About 60 percent of undergraduate classes have fewer than 26 students.

There were two recent building openings on the UNBC campus. The Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre is a 145,000-square-foot athletic facility for varsity, junior varsity and recreational sports and fitness. The center has an indoor track, strength rooms, three full basketball courts and two indoor turf fields for soccer, rugby, lacrosse and baseball. The Teaching and Learning Centre is one of the largest buildings on campus at 92,000 square feet. It is equipped with classrooms, teaching labs, offices and research areas and will help the university meet the academic needs of up to 600 additional students.
