Founded in 2002, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa offers a student-centered approach to teaching and research. The recent addition to the higher education scene enrolls approximately 5,000 students. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology confers bachelor's and master's degrees in more than 30 programs, including applied science, criminology, commerce, education, engineering, engineering and management, health information management, health sciences, information technology, science, and science and management. OIT sItudents work in a laptop-based learning environment that gives them instant access to professors.

Classes take place in award-winning, ultra-modern buildings where collaboration between students and faculty is encouraged. The Ontario Power Generation Engineering building is 40,000-square-feet of innovation and inspiration. It houses a rapid prototyping and manufacturing lab, combustion and engines lab, mechatronics lab and an emerging energy systems lab that features solar, wind, hydrogen and fuel-cell technology. The award-winning library is a friendly space for private and group study with a glass rotunda, café and a two-story fireside reading room.

The OIT student population is diverse with international students making up about five percent of the population. Students hail from more than 45 countries, including Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Korea and the United States.

  • Many of the environmentally-friendly buildings on campus use a healthy and efficient geothermal heating and cooling system.

  • The science building contains a 20,000-litre wet lab that is used by faculty and students to study aquatic toxicology.

  • The new fitness and activities center has two studios for aerobics and dance, two training rooms for sports training and fitness-related courses, a large triple gymnasium with seating for 2,000 spectators, and an indoor track for walking and running.

  • A new automotive research and development facility set to open in 2009 will give researchers and students the opportunity to test vehicles in a wind tunnel simulating varied weather conditions and a four-post shaker system to test vehicle stability in hazardous road conditions.
