The
University of Pennsylvania Annenberg School of Communication is a major center of communications and media research in the
United States. Established in 1959 as the result of the generosity of Walter Annenberg, a diplomat and philanthropist, this school at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania - one of the oldest universities in the country - is a leader in media
education, research and policy studies.
The Ph.D. program at UPenn Annenberg trains future media and communications scholars. Annenberg School of Communication also offers an undergraduate major that is administered through the University of Pennsylvania's School of
arts and sciences. The research interests of students and faculty are broad at UPenn Annenberg and include health communication, children and the media, new media, political communication, media institutions and visual communication. Faculty members at University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication are frequently called on to comment on issues for major media outlets such as
the New York Times, National Public Radio and
U.S. News and World Report. Recent and forthcoming books authored by professors in the department covers topics ranging from Rush Limbaugh and the conservative media to global media studies and communications and history.
All graduate students at University of Pennsylvania Annenberg School for Communication are admitted directly into the Ph.D. program. Doctoral students are guaranteed five years of complete funding. Approximately 1,400 undergraduate students take courses at UPenn Annenberg every year. Alumni of Annenberg School of Communication have gone on to faculty positions at leading universities around the world and have had their writing and research published in a wide variety of academic journals, books, magazines and newspapers. Other graduates have managed presidential campaigns, founded public relations firms, and worked for public broadcasting networks and major Hollywood studios.
