Established in 1884, the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine is the only veterinary school in the state of Pennsylvania. Its founders recognized the important role that preventing and controlling diseases in animals could play in human health, and since then the school has been closely allied with the medical school at the University of Pennsylvania.

The University of Pennsylvania school of Veterinary Medicine has two campuses, one on the main Penn campus in Philadelphia that is home to classrooms, research offices, administrative facilities and a veterinary hospital, and the New Bolton Center, a large-animal facility about 35 miles away in Kennet Square, Pa. More than 6,000 patient visits take place annually at the center's George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals, and the field service sees more than 19,000 animals every year. The New Bolton Center also features the Marshak Dairy, the Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Medicine and Pathology and an animal diagnostic laboratory. In addition, The University of Pennsylvania school of Veterinary Medicine is home to more than 260 active research projects and the school has interdisciplinary research centers where basic science and clinical faculty can work together on projects.

Students at Penn Vet can concentrate in a range of clinical specialties including surgery, critical care, anesthesiology, radiology, reproduction and pathology. Training opportunities for students at the University of Pennsylvania school of Veterinary Medicine include residencies, internships, fellowships and research. There are two veterinary libraries on campus and a variety of continuing education opportunities available for practicing veterinarians. Uniquely motivated graduate students may choose to pursue a V.M.D./M.B.A. degree, a combined course that offers training in business through University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
