Founded in 1787 as a small, private school, the Pittsburgh Academy was located in a log cabin near Pittsburgh's three rivers. In the 219 years since, the University of Pittsburgh has evolved into an internationally recognized center of learning and research. Besides being one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States, the University of Pittsburgh is also among the most distinguished colleges in Pennsylvania and the nation's comprehensive universities, with a wide variety of high-quality programs in both the arts and sciences and professional fields. Many of the University of Pittsburgh's 200 graduate degree programs rank among the top in the nation both academically, and in federally funded research support. These rankings demonstrate the University of Pittsburgh's excellence in educating research scholars and preparing leaders in the professions. Each year, hundreds of University of Pittsburgh students participate in undergraduate research projects by working alongside faculty in laboratories, libraries, and offices across campus. | |
