Founded in 1787 as a small, private school, the Pittsburgh Academy was located in a log cabin near Pittsburgh's three rivers. In the 219 years since, the University of Pittsburgh has evolved into an internationally recognized center of learning and research.

Besides being one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States, the University of Pittsburgh is also among the most distinguished colleges in Pennsylvania and the nation's comprehensive universities, with a wide variety of high-quality programs in both the arts and sciences and professional fields.
