The University of Portland, Oregon's Catholic university, is closely affiliated with the Congregation of Holy Cross, an order of Catholic priests and brothers. The Catholic university, which sits on a 130-acre campus with 31 halls and buildings, is known as one of the nation's 100 character-building colleges, according to the Templeton Foundation.

Based on its academic reputation, selectivity of admission, freshmen retention, student/faculty ratio, graduation rate and campus resources, the Catholic university also has been ranked among the top five regional universities in the West by U.S. News & World Report.

More than 3,300 students are enrolled at the Catholic university and attend either the College of Arts & Sciences, the Pamplin School of business, the School of Education, the School of engineering, or the School of nursing. The Catholic university also offers 12 graduate programs in eight academic areas. There are about 197 full-time and 119 part-time faculty, and the student to faculty ratio is 13 to one. More than 97 percent of the faculty members hold terminal degrees in their fields.
