The University of Southern Indiana began as a regional campus of Indiana state university in 1965 and is now a comprehensive public institution situated within wooded rolling hills. Southern Indiana is expected to continue growing in the years ahead as it recently acquired more than 900 acres of land valued at $3 million. The land is adjacent and south of the current 300-acre campus.

The University of Southern Indiana has more than 10,000 students enrolled from 91 Indiana counties, 35 other states and 44 nations. There are about 579 full-time and 246 part-time faculty members. Southern Indiana offers programs and services for both traditional college-age students as well as part-time, commuting, and older students. The University of Southern Indiana is authorized to confer the following degrees: associate and bachelor's degrees in Arts, Science, and nursing, as well as bachelor's in General Studies and Science in engineering, and bachelor's and master's degrees in Social Work. The University of Southern Indiana also offers about 10 master's degree programs.

Southern Indiana also educates over 12,000 persons annually through comprehensive noncredit programs, including workshops, conferences, seminars, and instructional courses.
