The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, established in 1911, is the flagship statewide academic health system and part of the statewide, multi-campus University of Tennessee. The School of Biomedical
engineering and Colleges of
Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine,
nursing, Pharmacy and Social Work are located on the UTHSC campus. In addition to primary campus locations in Memphis, Chattanooga, and Knoxville, there are more than 100 clinical and educational sites across the state.
More than 2,600 students attend the five medical schools and schools of dentistry and pharmacy that consolidated to form the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Students can choose from four undergraduate and 20 graduate or professional degrees in various disciplines and sub-disciplines of allied health sciences, health science, dentistry, engineering, graduate health sciences, medicine, nursing and pharmacy. Admissions priority is given to qualified Tennessee residents.
Another UTHSC College of Pharmacy has been constructed on the Knoxville campus to meet the growing demand for pharmacists. An additional 225 students will be enrolled every year as a result.

Citizens of East Tennessee receive primary care through University Family Physicians, which amounts to about 26,000 office visits every year.
University Family Physicians also provides hospital care services for patients of 38 Family Medical practices in the community and provides care to 1,200 patients yearly on their inpatient service.
The University Family Physicians outpatient practice provides 3,500 referrals to specialists on an annual basis.
