The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler joined as one of six academic medical centers in the University of Texas System in 1977. The main campus is situated on 614 acres about eight miles northeast of Tyler, Texas. The primary mission of this academic medical center is three-fold: patient care, research, and education in the treatment of pulmonary and heart disease. UT Health Center's core medical areas are pulmonology, cardiology, oncology, primary care, occupational medicine, and surgery.

UT Health Center consists of a 125-bed hospital and associated outpatient clinics. The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler has about 100 faculty members, which equals 70 clinical faculty in more than 25 medical specialties, as well as 35 research faculty. Residency programs are available in family medicine, occupational medicine, and pharmacy, as well as master's degree programs in biotechnology and environmental science.

Recent expansion and renovation plans include a new 10,000-square-foot University Health Clinic located near the corner of University Boulevard and Patriot Drive on The University of Texas at Tyler campus. The health clinic provides services in family medicine, allergy care, rheumatology, and sports medicine, with radiology and lab services provided on site.

The UT Health Center is the former site of Camp Fannin, an infantry training center that prepared more than 100,000 men a year for combat.

Physician researchers at UT Health Center's Center for Clinical Research conduct more than 100 clinical trials of new treatments for conditions that include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and pneumonia.

The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler acquired degree-granting authority in 2005.
