University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas is an academic medical center, patient-care provider, and research institution. Part of the University of Texas System, the medical center has three degree-granting institutions, including UT Southwestern medical school, UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and UT Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School. Nearly 4,200 medical, graduate and allied health students, residents and postdoctoral fellows are trained at these three schools every year.

One of four medical schools in the University of Texas System and one of eight in the state of Texas, admission to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas is very competitive. Only about 230 students gain entry each year. About 1,539 full-time and 425 part-time faculty members instruct these students but also continue to educate physicians beyond medical school. Faculty members train nearly 2,300 clinical residents and fellows seeking postgraduate specialty training and provide continuing medical education at more than 1,150 events.
