University of the Incarnate Word, founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, is a Catholic institution located on a 154-acre campus just minutes from downtown
San Antonio, Texas in Alamo Heights. The campus is near Brackenridge Park, the San Antonio Zoo, Japanese Tea Gardens, the Witte Museum of History and Natural Science, and the McNay Art Museum. There are also trails and other scenic areas for running or walking.
There are approximately 5,200 students enrolled. About 4,300 of them are undergraduates, and almost 600 are first time freshmen. The student to faculty ratio is 14 to one. The average class size is 25 students. University of the Incarnate Word offers more than 70 undergraduate and graduate programs. However, in addition to the traditional course offerings, UIW also offers programs such as theatre arts,
fashion design, computer
graphic arts, nuclear
medicine, nutrition and meteorology.
Working adults can take accelerated, evening classes that cost almost 60 percent less than a regular private school tuition. This Adult Degree Completion Program is offered at three locations in San Antonio: Alamo Heights Center, Santa Rosa Center, and the Northeast Center.
