The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, a private, comprehensive, co-educational university that was founded in 1821 as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, is the first college of pharmacy in the United States. Students are educated to pursue careers in the science, pharmaceutical and health care industries. The campus is located in University City, a thriving community of more than 30,000 college students in six area colleges and universities.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is also surrounded by more than 250 medical facilities and is within two hours of 80 percent of the world's major pharmaceutical firms. Students can choose majors from five colleges that include the Philadelphia college of Pharmacy, College of Health Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Graduate Studies and College of health care business and Policy. There are more than 2,400 undergraduates and about 369 graduate students enrolled at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. There are more than 140 full-time faculty members. Almost all have a Ph.D. or other doctoral degree. The student to faculty ratio is 14 to one.

Expansion on the campus has led to more than 80 state-of-the-art laboratories, including the Center for Advanced Pharmacy Studies, the first laboratory of its kind at any college of pharmacy nationwide. USP also recently opened the McNeil Science and Technology Center, a three-story, 77,000-square-foot leading edge facility equipped with research laboratories and state-of-the-art-equipped support spaces to accommodate more undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral, and faculty researchers in biology, microbiology, physics and other scientific fields.
