Virginia military institute is a public, four-year, Undergraduate college located in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley about three and a half hours from Washington DC. Founded in 1839, IT was the first state military college in the nation.

Of Virginia Military Institute's 134-acre campus, 12 acres are a National Historic District. The campus is commonly referred to as "the Post."

Virginia Military Institute Cadets must participate in an ROTC program, selecting Air Force, Army, Marines, or Navy. In addition, Cadets live within a military system, staying in barracks, wearing uniforms and eating in a mess hall. A typical day is carefully regimented, with an emphasis on order and discipline.

U.S. News and World Report has ranked Virginia Military Institute the top public liberal arts college in the nation.
