Virginia state university, a four-year public institution located about 25 miles south of Richmond, Va., offers more than 40 majors and 13 graduate programs to the school's more than 4,700 students.

Founded in 1882, Virginia state university was the nation's first entirely state-supported four-year college for blacks. U.S. News and World Report ranked Virginia state university No. 5 of the 81 historically black public colleges and universities (HBCU). VSU was also ranked 15th best HBCU when taking into account both public and private schools.

The 236-acre main campus of Virginia state university includes more than 50 buildings, 15 residence halls and 16 classroom buildings. In addition, there is an agricultural research facility that spans 416 acres.
