West Virginia State University, founded in 1891, offers Baccalaureate, Associate and Graduate degrees. This suburban university is located in Institute, West Virginia, not far from the City of Charleston. This historically black university has been rated in the fourth tier of liberal arts Colleges in U.S. News and World Report's "Americas Best Colleges of 2008." West Virginia State University offers several programs of study in areas such as media studies, modern foreign languages, social work and others. The universities mission is to "meet higher education and economic development needs of the state and region through innovative teaching and applied research."

Not only does West Virginia State University offer a comprehensive academic program, but a notable athletic program as well. Men's and women's varsity sports are available for students including football, basketball, tennis and more. West Virginia State University's award-winning women's tennis team is ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Great Lakes Region Poll.

The University, one of the two land-grant institutions in the state of West Virginia, offers some unique attributes such as the Gus R. Douglass Land Grant Institute. The Institute provides agricultural, consumer, environmental and outreach programs, which
include animal health and nutrition programs, youth livestock education, Urban Forestry and others. In 1999, the Bioplex Project started on the campus. The project's goal is the commercialization of digester technology through "the better understanding and refinement of the digestion processes and optimal utilization of digested effluent streams."
