liberal arts college founded in 1882 and located in Walla Walla, WA. Whitman offers more than 40 departmental majors in programs such as political science, English, environmental studies, biology, and more, as well as the option to create or combine two majors.
Students gain a competitive
liberal arts education with access to an accomplished faculty, with 98% of Whitman's tenure-track faculty holding a Ph.D. or terminal degree in their field. The College offers a 10:1 student to faculty ratio, allowing for more individualized access in the classroom and for research opportunities. Whitman faculty have acquired numerous honors and fellowships from renowned institutes such as the National Science Foundation, the Battelle Research Institute, the National Institutes of Health, Fulbright Fellowships, and more.
The 80-acre campus is located in the historic city of Walla Walla, within a 4-4.5 hour driving distance of Seattle, Portland, and Boise. Students enjoy a variety of on- and off-campus activities and state-of-the-art facilities. A few of the more than 85 student organizations include the Hiking Club, the Campus Greens, Aikido Club, Club Latino, and the Whitman Investment Company. The campus features several new buildings, including the Fouts Center for the Visual Arts, renovation of Sherwood Athletic Center, and addition of indoor rock climbing wall and the Glover-Alston Center for Diversity.
Off campus in the town of Walla Walla, students enjoy an award-winning downtown area with restaurants, shops, and galleries. Many appreciate the nearby outdoor opportunities for cycling, hiking, canoeing, skiing, and climbing. The Whitman College Outdoor Program regularly schedules local and regional trips for adventurers of all abilities.
The student body is diverse with students representing 45 states and 30 countries. Twenty-five percent of our incoming first-year class is made up of students of color and international students and qw percent are first-generation college students. "Whitties" also take advantage of an amazing
study abroad program with opportunities to study in countries like Ecuador, Ireland, Kenya, Jordan, China, and dozens of others.
The Whitman College athletic program is popular, with 70 percent of students participating in intramural sports and 20 percent participating in a varsity sport. The College is a member of the NCAA (Div. III) and the Northwest Conference, with seven varsity teams for women and seven for men.
