Wiley College is a historically black,
liberal arts institution that was founded in 1873. The college was named after Bishop Isaac T. Wiley a minister, medical missionary and educator. Wiley College is located in Marshall, Texas and is affiliated with The United Methodist Church and the United Negro College Fund.
Wiley College offers four degree programs that include an Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science, and a Bachelor of
business Administration. Wiley College also offers about 13 academic majors in three academic divisions. The college offers a student faculty ratio of 15 to one with more than 65 faculty members.
The 63-acre campus at Wiley is burgeoning with numerous programs, student organizations and athletics for students to take advantage of. The university offers a women's and men's athletic program with sports ranging from volleyball to baseball.
Many state of the art facilities can be found on the Wiley campus such as the Thomas Winston Cole, Sr. Library. The facility offers a variety of print, non-print and electronic holdings as well as a distinguished African-
American Collection. There are also roughly 17 other facilities located on campus.
The city of Dallas is also not far from campus offering students a wide-variety of culture and diversity. Students at Wiley College can visit the Dallas Museum of Art and enjoy a variety of restaurants and shopping.
Wiley College also offers unique programs such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Science,
engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace
Academy and Aerospace
education Laboratory program. Through this programs students can explore aerodynamics and flight through virtual reality and other flight simulation technology. Another unique program is the Upward Bound program, a federally funded TRIO Program through the Department of Education.
Wiley is also home of the "Great Debaters" where Melvin Tolson, an English Professor led the Wiley Debate Team to a national championship in 1935. This true story inspired the feature film opening in 2008, starring Denzel Washington, titled "The Great Debaters."
