As a public, two-year, "open door" institution, Wilkes community college is committed to providing comprehensive education and educational support services for people in Wilkes, Ashe, and Alleghany counties and beyond. As a member of the North Carolina Community College System, Wilkes Community College seeks to enhance intellectual, economic, cultural, and social development through a variety of means, by providing quality education, training and retraining for the workforce, including basic skills education, occupational, technical, and pre-baccalaureate programs; support for economic development through services to business and industry, both public and private; and a variety of services and cultural activities that improve the quality of life.

Wilkes Community College offers several associate degree curricula that parallel the freshman and sophomore years at most senior colleges and universities. The Associate in Arts (A.A.), and Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees are awarded when program requirements have been completed.

The Adult high school Diploma Program at Wilkes Community College is offered to adults age 18 or older. Programs of study are of sufficient duration and intensity to enable adults to develop the skills necessary for the diploma. Instruction is offered in a classroom setting, through supervised, individual programmed learning. At this North Carolina community college, credit is given for all work completed in the public school system as shown on the high school transcript. Students must pass a competency exam to complete the program.
