Xavier University of Louisiana, founded in 1925, is the only historically Catholic, black college in the Western Hemisphere. St. Katharine Drexel of Philadelphia and her Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a religious community dedicated to the
education of African Americans and Native Americans, originally established Xavier as a
high school in 1915.
More than 3,000 students attend Xavier University--about half are from Louisiana. Xavier
University of Louisiana offers training in about three dozen fields on the undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree level. More than half of the undergraduate students currently major in the natural or health sciences, with the most popular choices being biology, chemistry,
business and pharmacy. About 90 percent of Xavier's 186 full-time faculty have earned doctorates or equivalent terminal degrees. The student to faculty ratio is about 15 to one.
Recent campus renovations include a new University Center and the expansion of both the Xavier's Science Complex and the College of Pharmacy. Student housing at the University of Xavier Louisiana has also increased with a 514-bed residence hall and a warehouse that has been reconstructed into a Living Learning Center providing apartment style suites and rooms for over 400 students.
